Bill Gates’ last day

Bill Gates & Slash
Anyone who reads tech blogs will probably have not missed that it was the CES show this week. A big event full of consumer electronics of all shapes and sizes, both useful and useless, it all gets showcased here. In fact the whole HD-DVD and Blu-ray battle has been raging at this event since warner dropped HD-DVD to make Blu-ray take a very nice lead.

But enough of that, this year is Bill Gates’ last year at Microsoft. What a man! Seriously, he’s never got the respect he deserves, he has rescued Apple several times since the start, like an older brother. He gives a vast sum of money to charity, he is one of the only big bosses who knows the very core of a computer, and yet still people lay into him when they delete their own documents, or their PC crashes and they haven’t saved for 3 hours. Well, I have to say, he is a hero of mine, he is the father of software, and I respect him hugely.

Anyway, his keynote speech at CES 2008 was a light hearted look at what his last day at microsoft might be like, it’s not laugh out loud funny, but light hearted, and shows that he’s got a sense of humour, in fact, if you see the interviews on Gizmodo, he’s really quite fun. So, here it is:

To do: must listen to Innervisions

InnervisionsAnyone who knows me will know, despite my geek lifestyle, I am also a soul and funk nut. I’m pretty sure a lot of geeks like this sort of music, but it’s not usually attached to the geek brand I guess.

I watched “In pursuit of happiness” over the weekend, which I thought was a fantastic film, especially as it was based on a true story, you really wanted something to go right for this guy and Will Smith pulled off the serious roll perfectly, hopefully, long gone are the typical black quips like “I’ve gotta get me one of these” that he is now known (and sometimes hated) for.

Films on your iPhone

Ahhh, the iphone, the hype, oh the hype. It’s good, but hey, in a couple of years, all mobile companies will be jumping on that band wagon, those companies are pretty dynamic. Anyway, People say to me, “but the iphone has a large screen so you can watch films” etc. Mr David Lynch, despite looking a bit mad and archaic thinking, kind of sums it up nicely.

Geek BadgeI’m going to say it now, very clearly, I am a geek, I’m actually proud to have this title bestowed upon me, I’m out, I sat my parents down, and i said “mum, dad, i am geek”, they hurt at first, but now they have come to accept that sometimes I will bring a new tech item home for them to meet.

Nutty Professor meal scene

This morning I was listening to the radio, and they were talking about injuries happening at Christmas time. One guy wrote in saying he blacked out after not being able to breathe laughing so much while watching the Nutty Professor meal scene.

I actually think this is a really funny scene, ok, maybe not black out funny, but the conversation, if you can work out the fast paced talking, is fantastic, not to mention the fact all the cast, apart from the boy is Eddie Murphy. I think it’s the funniest thing he’s done this side of the 80s.

Gmail’s problem

Gmail Logo
I have to admit, I’m in love with Google. I tend to do this, once a company gets a bit evil, I go for it. I have no problem with Microsoft, it’s mainly what company has the best software etc. Apple is now known for its sweat shops etc. but people still think they’re good, so maybe it’s just subjective.

Anyway, not intending to bash companies. My thing is Gmail. I think it is fantastic. The spam filter is second to none, the features are brilliant, and, for the first time, I am considering ditching Outlook for Gmail as my default mail client. “So why don’t you?” you ask. Well I don’t want to use a gmail address. I have my own domain name which I use. “But you could use that with Gmail”. Yes, yes I could, and this is where Gmail’s secret comes out. If I send an email from my domain email, it makes my from field: “xxx@gmail.com on behalf of xxx@xxx.com”. Not great. I don’t want people to know my Gmail address.

That green thing

Recycle!Over the last few years, I’m sure you are aware, that there has been a big rise in trying to get people to go green. And for good reason, Global warming etc. I’m trying my best here, but I just can’t grasp it. The problem is that no one seems to want to help us, it seems to be this backward step rather than trying to improve what we have, we get “use less electricity”, “don’t travel”, “wash your clothes cold” etc. I’m all up for switching lights off, but surely it should be “we need to sort out a green way of supplying electricity”, “our planes need to be greener” etc. I washed my clothes cold this weekend, still dirty.

Wow, that last post has got me all excited, need more illustration. The other day, a current colleague of mine, also a budding designer drew an illustration of me, fantastic, it was for a meeting, so they could make a ginger bread replica of me. I love the creative community.

People who know me will know, in some capacity, that I am a very big illustration fan. It sparks an emotion in me and I have a long list of bookmarks in my browser so I can have a quick peek at something an illustrator has conjured up. It always makes me think “I wish i could do that”.

The N word

So today I was looking at a swear word list for a site I am building at work, I found quite a useful site here:
http://www.badscience.net/?p=228

There is a useful section on how bad people see the swear word. I was not shocked by most, but the racial terms I was surprised actually came underneath the obvious swear words as mild. Although I wouldn’t class these as swear words as such, they are words which, in my mind, should never be used. Ok, the N word is used a lot in music, but I am shocked (especially at the P word), it actually silences me when I hear these words anyway (especially when used at me), so the mild rating was interesting to see other people’s views.
